They will probably say “someone who does something for other people out of the goodness of his heart.” Odysseus, who is the main character of the book “The Odyssey” written by Homer, would fit the dictionary¹s definition of a hero; but if you go deeper, looking at what people feel a hero is, he doesn¹t even come close. In the book, Odysseus does nothing out of the goodness of his heart.Odysseus is a hero due to the extraordinary leadership abilities exemplified as a result of his tenacious bravery, swift intellect, and selfless acts.
He has an idea of what awaits for him in the land of Hades, however the fact he journeys into the depth of the underworld alone requires much more adventurous bravery out of Odysseus.
The last type of courage shown by the hero is fortitude.
While he was on his journey, Odysseus had affairs with other women.
When he stayed at Calypso¹s Island, he had multiple encounters with her despite his marriage to Penelope.
Odysseus killed every one of the suitors in cold blood when most of them didn¹t commit a crime suitable for the death penalty.
He also killed all of the maids who were raped by the suitors as if the had a choice in the matter. When Elpenor fell off the roof at Circe¹s house, Odysseus didn¹t even bother to bury him. At the Cyclops’ house he didn¹t try to defend his crew members who ended up being killed and eaten. This type of bravery is arguably the most challenging to overcome since it requires an individual to be courageous while in a distressful environment.Even though Odysseus is suffering due to the seven years of hardships while simultaneously baring the wrath of Poseidon, he still possesses composure and courage when Ino tells him to take a leap of faith into the ocean.Eurylochus told Odysseus not to send men to see what was on Circe¹s island and because he sent them anyway, they ended up being turned into pigs.Odysseus also neglects other people¹s lives when he takes action; such as when he tried to fight Scylla after strictly being told not to.Because of this ignorant action, he lost three more men on top of the other six.He also sacrificed men when he waited at the Cyclops¹ home for “gifts.” Odysseus was very self-centered where real heroes are not.Disloyalty surely doesn¹t belong on a hero¹s record.Although a war hero, Odysseus is not a hero in other respects./ They would have dropped their oars again, in panic,/ to roll for cover under the decking.” (XII, 289-293).A hero is “a man noted for his special achievements” according to the dictionary, but if you ask most people what a hero is, you will get the same general response.
