The “If I Were Mayor” contest encourages young people to think about public service and future community leadership.

The contest is open to any third and seventh grade student living in North Dakota.

She and her family moved to Warrenton about three years ago and she has given some thought to how she would improve her town.

If Haylee were mayor, she said she would like to implement a neighborhood enhancement program to help people fix up their houses and properties.

This program will help many people keep their properties in beautiful condition so our people can be proud of where they live.

My second initiative is to engage and benefit our business community.

Cari Wood, Haylee’s mother, said that Haylee is very creative, and loves painting with her grandmother.

Haylee would like to paint her bedroom walls -- “a blank canvas,” as her mother describes it. Haylee is considering a career as a veterinarian someday, and toward that end, plans on volunteering at Fauquier’s SPCA when she starts eighth grade. She is a wonderful student and I am privileged to be able to have her in my class.”Mayor Nevill thanked Haylee for her community spirit.

Warrenton Mayor Carter Nevill is getting some help.

Haylee Burnett, a seventh-grader at Auburn Middle School, has some ideas to improve Warrenton.
