Ann Marie Hurtado’s resource provides: Hurtado has worked in schools and libraries for more than eight years and for five years has been a librarian in the Youth Services Department of the Pasadena (California) Public Library.
There she created a bilingual yearlong reading program called Lucha Libros for elementary school students and facilitated a mother–daughter book club, a series of hands-on science workshops, and two monthly creative writing workshops, each tailored to different age groups—one is for tweens 9 to 12 years old, and the other is for kids 5 to 8 years old who are still developing their basic writing skills.
A creative writer needs to master a lot of skills – planning a logical storyline, selecting the right words, developing memorable characters and editing and proofing his own work.
The trick is to break down the task into manageable components and writing one part at a time.

And, as unpopular as this statement might be, a steady diet of writing prompts and copy work does not foster meaningful and purposeful for most kids. We also want to sprinkle FUN into our writing instruction at times.
While writing may not be fun every day, it’s nice to have a few fun activities in our back pocket when we need them.
And it’s no wonder with the meaningless writing activities we sometimes ask kids to do.
That’s why I’m sharing some creative writing activities that can make writing a little more purposeful and yes, even fun for kids. We want the writing we’re asking kids to be meaningful and purposeful.
How do you get kids to want to write without complaining? Have them think about how they would like to be treated by a friend, do they treat their friends the way they want to be treated? If you could be invisible what would you do and why? Remember these are things the children are feeling, there are no wrong answers.13. To them the children with their writing ask them the following questions. Have you ever told a lie that turned into another lie? Ask them first if they think a million dollars is a lot of money. Would they change things such as making gas or food free for everyone? This is a great writing topic to use when teaching children about losing.
